Bamboo Microscope
Science is best learnt by conducting experiments. Children in “developed” countries have a much better science learning experience, thanks to the expensive lab equipment they get to use. Unfortunately, in “developing” countries, children hardly get to see science in action. There are many organizations trying to close this learning gap, and this article from Nature describes one such effort. It talks about Delhi-based nonprofit Jodo Gyan which makes microscopes out of bamboo and distributes it to underprivileged kids.
Nice read, check it out!

Wow! This looks like a real cool idea.
The minute I saw this, I wanted to gift my cousin who is in class IX now something like this.
Only if my cousin gets a chance to put every small thing that comes to his mind under HIS OWN microscope without the fear of spoiling the instrument (the way we feel in the science labs of schools), will he appreciate the beauty of science.
I am really impressed !
That’s an awesome view point Rajat!
Thanks for sharing it with us!
I mailed Komal from Jodo Gyan enquiring about the availability of the microscopes in Bnagalore. She replied back saying that the orders can be placed by an email to jodogyandel@yahoo.com. They will arrange for the microscopes to be delivered through courier. Payment can be made by a dd.
