GOONJ, formed a decade ago, is an initiative to provide basic amenities to far flung villages by turning one’s wastage to another’s resource. The “goonj” of this organization is spread over twenty states in India. As of today, it has a lot of good will work to its name and has touched millions of lives. It will be very surprising to know that the raw materials used by them for all their campaigns are things which most of us will not even think twice before discarding.
They have done a lot of work by collecting clothes which are not utilized in the urban households. These materials that are collected are not only sent to disaster hit areas but also put into very innovative use in villages to help people develop awareness towards hygiene and take responsibility to improve their lifestyle.
One such idea of theirs, which has won the Changemaker’s Award this year and requires a special mention is the “Not just a piece of cloth” campaign. It’s devastating to know how countless women in rural areas suffer from diseases and infections which are sometimes even fatal, just because they use dirty cloth during those five days of menses. This campaign is aimed at providing a clean piece of cloth for women to use as a sanitary napkin. The campaign not only helps spread awareness amongst the women folk but also empowers them to make it themselves and sell it. Lets see what GOONJ has to say about this achievement of theirs…
